Distributing Srila Prabhupada’s Books : Oct/Nov 2010

Save the Rhinos?

We had to go to Eastgate mall to do some shopping and we carried some of Srila Prabhupada’s books along with us. Pam Mataji easily gave out a few books and got a few donations from a few of the shoppers in the mall. One thing that stood out that day was that the Checkers Hyper outlet had about 2 or 3 people from one of the conservation organisations standing at the door, trying to create some awareness about rhino poaching and to get some donations from the shoppers as well. This was due to the recent frequency of rhino poaching occurrences.

One thing that is apparent is that many of these individuals and organizations are hypocritical and contradictory in their dealings. They may dedicate their lives to protecting this species of animal or another, saying that they should not be killed and poached but they will then go home at the end of the day and enjoy a meal of some other animal that was slaughtered and killed just to satisfy the palate. Instead of protecting the most dear creature to Lord Sri Krsna, the cow, they will rather protect others that have no real benefit to society and the public at large. It’s up to us to educate  them and show them that only Krsna Consciousness is complete, all encompassing and provides welfare and protection to all living entities.

Newtown Diwali Festival…

The devotees from the Krsna Balarama youth group enthusiastically manned a book table at the Newtown Diwali festival and kindly allowed us to assist them as well. We went out on foot but found it a bit tough, as many of the people there were engaged with the stage items, etc that were going on.We did manage to distribute some books and calendars and get some donations as well.

Grab every opportunity…

Some of the Lenasia devotees knew of some relatives/colleagues that were having a ceremony for a recently departed loved one and at short notice, asked if we could assist with having some bhajans and reading from scripture at the ceremony in Actonville. That Saturday morning, assisted by Yamuna Jivana Prabhu and Sita Thakurani Mataji, we had some bhajans and read from Bhagavad Gita for those present. We set up a small book table as well and were glad we came prepared, as many of Srila Prabhupada’s books as well as calendars went out.

Everything is making sense…

Luvasan Prabhu distributed a Quest For Enlightenment to a lady at the workplace a while back. He saw her again recently and asked her about the reading, etc. She said that what she was reading made her feel safe and at peace and that everything was making sense. He told her that if she is finished reading the book, she could pass it on to a family member, etc but she said that this book is staying with her, in her library at home for the next 3 years! Haribol!

Last year we performed some kirtan at the Diwali festival hosted by one of the local Benoni temples (Shree Marieamman Kaliamman Siva Subramanyam Aalayam). The organizers asked if we could participate again this year and we gladly agreed to render some service. Some of us performed Harinam during the float procession, whilst the others distributed Srila Prabhupada’s books. The team then performed some kirtan on the stage for about 10 minutes. We are thankful to the organizers for allowing us to participate and to do some preaching as well.

Even a dog can take part…

The Namahatta team decided to introduce having some Harinam before having class, when we have regular Namahattas. It’s been in action for the last 2 months or so and is proving to be very fruitful. Whilst some are keeping the kirtan going, others are speaking to passersby and distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books, flyers and snack Prasadam. The devotees have all agreed that the Harinam enlivens and charges them spiritually. It’s a very effective way to preach and canvass for the Namahatta and ISKCON as well.

You will see in one of the pics – the resident dog at the Bakerton temple, accompanied the devotees on Harinam the one morning. The devotees call him Lal. He looked to be enjoying the experience and even helped by getting the other dogs to make a noise and draw people out of their houses, to hear the kirtan, speak with the devotees and take some books as well. Srila Prabhupada says in his purport to the Maha Mantra – ‘There is no need of understand the language of the mantra, nor there is any need of mental speculation, nor any intellectual adjustment for chanting this maha-mantra. It springs automatically from the spiritual platform, and as such, anyone can take part in this transcendental sound vibration without any previous qualification, and dance in ecstasy. We have seen this practically. Even a child can take part in the chanting, or even a dog can take part in it.’

As you can see, there’s a place for everyone in this mission of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabu and as servants of Srila Prabhupada, our duty is to try to engage everyone in some way or other in the service of the Lord.

Heading into the December book marathon, we pray to put in an extra effort and to try to make a difference over the festive season.

Be assured that there is no more direct way to preach than to distribute Krishna conscious books. Whoever gets a book is benefited. If he reads the book he is benefited still more, or if he gives the book to someone else for reading, both he and the other person is benefited. Even if one does not read the book but simply holds it and sees it, he is benefited. If he simply gives small donation towards the work of Krishna consciousness he is benefited. And anyone who distributes these transcendental literatures, he is also benefited. Therefore Sankirtana is the prime benediction for the age. [Letter to German disciples, 6 May 1977]

Whatever progress we have made, it is simply due to distributing the books. So go on, and do not divert your mind for a moment from this. [Letter to Ramesvara, 11 October 1974]

Whenever I get report of my book selling I feel strength. Even now in this weakened condition I have got strength from your report. You should know that in this work you have Krishna’s blessings. [Letter to Satsvarupa, 8 September 1974]

The results show that there is no limit to our book distribution. Our books are qualified to be distributed unlimitedly. [Letter to Ramesvara, 18 January 1976]

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada and his transcendental books!

Till next time, chant Hare Krsna and be happy!
