The following is a message from Jayadvaita Maharaja before the start of the 2010 Summer Marathon
After Srila Vyasadeva, dissatisfied despite having written so many
books, received the instruction from Narada to directly glorify Krsna,
Vyasadeva sat down in his asrama and fixed his mind in meditation.
Then, with his pure mind fixed in devotional service, he saw in trance
the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And Vyasadeva also saw along with
the Lord the Lord’s external energy, maya, by which all conditioned
living beings are completely bewildered.
These living beings, he saw, are transcendental, but by maya’s
influence they imagine themselves to be made of matter, and therefore
they suffer grievous material miseries.
These miseries are superfluous, he saw, and they can be subdued by
bhakti-yoga. And therefore he wrote Srimad-Bhagavatam, the perfect
message of the Supreme Truth.
The message of Srimad-Bhagavatam is so powerful that it can quickly
revive the soul’s forgotten spirit of devotional service and in this
way extinguish lamentation, illusion, and fear.
Srila Prabhupada has given this powerful message of the Bhagavatam in
all of his books. (He gives the conclusive message of the Bhagavatam
even in Bhagavad-gita As It Is.)
So now — in a kind of trance of your own — you might picture Srila
Prabhupada’s books going out by the thousands and tens of thousands,
giving the message of Krsna consciousness to the people of Africa,
extinguishing the fires of lamentation, illusion, and fear.
You might picture people, one by one, receiving these books and
becoming fortunate and happy.
And you might picture yourself becoming part of this, going out and
helping spread this good fortune, putting a transcendental book in
someone’s hands, bringing someone back in touch with Krsna, right
there in the form of the book.
Whatever your service, whatever your circumstances, you might think
for a little while about how you could do this, what time and ways you
might find to help move these books out of the boxes and into people’s
hands. Ways that have worked for others. And ways that would work for
And then — best of all — with some inspiration from within, and
catching inspiration from others, you might just put your meditation
into action, become part of a wave of book distribution, and do
wonderful things and have wonderful experiences beyond what you even
And then, come January, you might look back and feel a kind of special
satisfaction to know that you acted as the agent of Srila Vyasadeva
and Srila Prabhupada by giving people in darkness the enlightening
message of Krsna in the form of these wonderful books.
December is almost upon us, and that great wave of book distribution,
in which you can play your own special part, starts moving now.
