Sankirtana Stories

This is the heart of ISKCON

At work I meet many people on a daily basis. I try to use this opportunity to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. One nice experience was meeting Twala. I actually met his mother in law before I met him. I distributed a copy of “Perfection of Yoga” to her. She took the book home and Twala saw it. Twala was very happy to see the book and enquired where she had got the book from, his mother-in-law explained to him and he insisted that she arrange for us to meet. When we met Twala, he said told us that he had read some of Srila Prabhupada’s books years ago but that the books had been lost somehow. He expressed how much he appreciated Srila Prabhupada’s writings and that reading the books made him feel nice. We had a wonderful discussion about Krishna and I tried my best to answer his questions and explain more about Krishna Consciousness. We agreed to keep in touch, and he bought three books.

A few weeks passed and Twala contacted me. He was delighted to have Srila Prabhupada’s books again and wanted to meet so we could talk more about Krishna. I explained to him that we have many more books and that he should take more titles which he agreed to. We met and spoke more about Krishna. I showed him the different books and explained more about our beloved Srila Prabhupada. We explained how Srila Prabhupada was given the order by his spiritual master Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Prabhupāda at their very first meeting to preach about Krishna in the English speaking countries and that if he ever got money to print Books about Krishna.

Standing before the printing press, Prabhupāda folded his palms together and offered a prayer to his spiritual master: “Jaya Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Paramahaṁsa Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Mahārāja Prabhupāda kī jaya!” Advaita asked Prabhupāda to give the press a transcendental name. “ISKCON Press,” Prabhupāda said matter-of-factly, as if it had already been named.
“Keep all the machines very clean,” Prabhupāda said, “and they will last a long time. This is the heart of ISKCON.”
“You are the heart of ISKCON, Prabhupāda,” a devotee said.
“And this is my heart,” said Prabhupāda.

Twala as anyone would be, was totally amazed by Srila Praphupada’s story. He bought more books and I gave him some Krishna Prasadam as well. Twala’s wife and kids live in Zimbabwe. He took Srila Prabhupada’s books with him when he went to visit them. The kids loved the books so much that they said that he could not take them back to South Africa. I told him not to worry and leave the books with his family and that I would get him more books. Twala says that when he speaks to his kids they ask him questions about the transcendental information in the books and to bring more books when he visits again. Twala and I keep in touch, he calls me if he has questions as he is going through the Books and he visits when he gets a chance.

As we know that Srila Prabhupada’s books have a life of their own and can go where we cannot and that anyone who reads them is sure to become a devotee of Krishna in the near future. Our duty is to connect as many living entities as possible with The Supreme Lord Krishna and His pure devotee Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada’s ISKCON is a preaching movement and the best preaching is distributing Srila Prabhupada’s Books. We have been given Krishna, the most valuable gift, by Srila Prabhupada’s endless mercy and tireless efforts, let’s not be selfish and keep Krishna to ourselves. The more we give Krishna to others the more Krishna will give Himself to us and Srila Prabhupada’s Book Distribution is a sure way to attract Krishna’s attention. Book Distribution is most pleasing to Srila Prabhupada, the entire Guru Parampara, Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda and ultimately Sri Sri Radha Krishna. So let’s keep the ‘Family Business’ thriving by beating the ‘Brhat Mrdanga’ .
